Built-In Wood Cabinetry Hoods

Updated on: August 01, 2022

Cabinetry wood hoods have increased in popularity in the last several years. Clients are wanting a seamless look, within the kitchen cabinetry, along with a way to properly ventilate their cook surface. It used to be that the only way to get this look was to go to a custom cabinet maker, or use a pre-fabricated unit that is finished by a cabinet supplier. Both of these options can be very costly (upwards of $1,500!) Today, more and more clients are achieving these same custom looks by identifying a hood style they like, and duplicating the look out of individual parts and pieces.

One thing to keep in mind, is that they do require more field assembly, and modifications of standard parts. However, with the cost savings, many clients are comfortable going with this route, to achieve this high-end look. At Cabinets.com, we always recommend you hire an experienced cabinet installer. With trim and moldings, an experienced installer can make any cabinet install (even RTA!) look fully custom.

As a designer, I am constantly designing and advising clients on how to create built-in wood hoods based on their specific needs. One item to verify, is the appliance specifications for the range or cooktop. What height does the manufacturer recommend ventilation be installed above the cook surface? The typical range is 24-30", but sometimes 36" with a higher end, commercial-type appliance. Once you\'ve determined the install height, factor in the base cabinets and counter top below, as well as the installation height at which the adjacent cabinets will stop. For example, if you are using 36" upper cabinets, your mounting height is 90". (Example: 90" – 36" of base = 54" – 30" of cook surface clearance = 24" Hood Height.) From here, verify the appliance specifications for the hood depth. I prefer to use outside hood depths at either 18" or 21", which allow head clearance around the hood.

Below are a few ideas of hoods I\'ve designed, and a brief explanation of the parts used for each:
