Follow these 5 tips to give your pantry a much-needed makeover and get organized!
Pull absolutely everything out of the pantry and do a thorough cleaning and dusting. Toss out anything that's expired. Take inventory of the items that you eat the most and items that tend to sit and eventually get thrown out and use this to revise your weekly shopping list. Anything that you know will never be used can be donated to your local food bank.
Group your pantry items by type- beverages, canned goods, snacks, grains, etc. Each category should have its own space and be separated for time saving convenience. Risers can be used to double storage space for condiments, cans, and packaged goods. Some items look nice and are practical in bins. Any circular items like onions and also bagged items like chips or snacks should be placed in a bin. Items that are used the least should be placed at the top, frequently used things should be eye level, and all non-food/bulky items should be on the bottom
Invest in clear containers for baking supplies, cereals, pasta, even spices. Not only does it look prettier than the packaged item, but items that you can readily see are more likely to be used. Prioritize air tight containers for the items that get stored for the longest time. Be practical and realize although it is aesthetically pleasing, not everything belongs in a pretty glass jar.
This is a fun touch that automatically makes your pantry look more organized. It's not necessary to label everything, especially if you know what it is, but it adds a little something especially if you use pretty or unique labels.
Not everyone is blessed with a large, walk in pantry. If your kitchen only allows for a pantry cabinet, you can still make it organized and functional. Consider installing a few roll out trays, like our customer did in the photo above. They are relatively inexpensive and super handy. You can also install an entire roll-out pantry, like this Rev-A-Shelf item on the right if you don't have much depth to work with.
