Gray Cabinets: Trend or Timeless?

Updated on: August 01, 2022

Kitchen design in a revolving door of trends and it's up to the consumer to decide which ones are worth trying or not. The most popular cabinet finish of late is white. It's versatile and a classic choice with its ability to come across as modern or traditional. Well, word on the design streets is that a new finish is taking white's place... gray. Yep, gray is being hyped up to be the next go-to color for kitchen cabinets.

Gray, like white, is a versatile color and is a neutral that can go towards cool or warm tones. Gray can be added as a glaze which can be brushed on lightly or more heavy depending on the preference, or it can be a painted finish which is more uniform and can also be in light gray tones or in darker gray. A light, glossy finish is right at home in a modern kitchen. Not into modern? Pick a dark, distressed gray finish for a more rustic look. Our "Shaker I and Shaker II" series cabinets offer a few different options for gray cabinet finishes. You could select a light glaze of gray over a white cabinet which provides just a hint of the color or you can go all gray with the "Creek Stone" finish.

My suggestion to making gray cabinets work is to choose a warmer tone and pair it with a warm color on the walls. By doing this you will avoid a stark, sterile look that sometimes gray can lean towards. You want people to relax in your kitchen, not feel like they are in a hospital operating room! Feel like upping your style? Try the two-toned cabinetry look. Pair white upper cabinets with a warm gray finish on the lower cabinets and you will have married two trends that will make you feel modern and timeless at the same time.
