Tired of backpacks piled at the door? Tripping on shoes every time you leave the house? If you are like a lot of families, this sounds like a typical scenario. Creating a mudroom with storage cabinets may be just the answer you are looking for!
A mudroom is traditionally known as a room where you can store backpacks and sports equipment, as well as use as an in-between from the dirt and dust from outside and the clean surfaces on the inside. You can be creative in its placement and the size can vary from a nook in a hallway to a large room that is also tied in with your laundry room.
Adding cabinets is a great way to maximize your mudroom's efficiency. Like with any organization project, it's important to take stock of all that you will need to store and make sure that you will have ample storage for it all. Backpacks, sports equipment, shoes, and coats aren't the only items you can store in your mudroom. Cleaning supplies, as well as kids' art supplies, are also things that you could store here as well.
We had one customer create a perfect "mudroom" in a hall with a mix of upper cabinets, cubbies for basket storage, and drawers at the bottom for shoes. It's a great example of using the space you have, with it's practical placement in a hall rather than a room dedicated to its use.
Here's another great shot of the functional space in the hall with plenty of storage and seating. To create this look, our customer worked with one of our designers and selected Springfield Maple Charcoal cabinets with a Brushed Black Glaze.
Speaking of selections, the materials you choose for your mudroom are just as important as the storage components. The room will take a beating, easily becoming one of the most used places in your home. It's crucial that you select materials that can withstand the daily use and still look great! Your floors should be easy to clean. The cabinet finish could go two ways: a white finish is easy to wipe clean and keeps the room looking bright, while a darker finish will hide dirt easily. The choice is yours when it comes to the mudroom's cabinet finish.
It is also a nice touch to throw in a spot for someone to be able to sit down to put their shoes on, whether it be a bench that's incorporated into the cabinet, or a small stool.
As you can see, cabinets can be both practical and pretty in a mudroom, but it's all about what works for you and your home. Talk to one of our designers to start creating a functional mudroom for your home using the cabinets that fit your style best!
