With Father's Day right around the corner, we thought we would talk about kitchens that have a more masculine design. Kitchens are no longer reserved for just the women; men are becoming more present and taking part in the cooking and entertaining. Designing a kitchen for Dad is simple and a masculine kitchen design has a few key elements that help make it stand out from a typical kitchen.

Warm Tones

Kitchens that are geared towards men have warmth to them that is usually achieved with wood stains and/or paint. A dark Espresso stain on a cabinet or a Charcoal finish would be a great choice if you were designing a kitchen for a bachelor or for the head chef in the house. Walls in a warm greige (a blend of gray and beige) give the perfect masculine feel to any space. Benjamin Moore's "Revere Pewter" is the perfect backdrop for a masculine kitchen. It's the perfect blend of gray and beige.

Industrial Accents

When designing for men, it's typical to add a few industrial style accents whether it is lighting or hardware. An industrial style takes the softness out of the kitchen and creates a more rugged, durable looking space. A unique way to add industrial like style would be a metal locker cabinet as storage rather than a typical wood built in, or instead of installing a fixed island, choose an industrial style rolling cart to serve as a prep area and storage.

Commercial Style Appliances

Let's face it, the more high-tech and James Bond-like the appliance, the more interest men are going to take into it. Appliance companies have caught on to this and are making refrigerators and ovens that will appeal to the more masculine set. Kitchen Aid just introduced an appliance line that features a black stainless steel finish with more rugged details and features than typical appliances. This is definitely a style that will be marketed towards men. Stainless steel kitchen hoods and large commercial style ranges are another great combination for the cook in your life!

Sleek and Simple

Another difference between a kitchen that is geared towards a man as opposed to a woman is the lack of decorative accessories. Women like to add decorative accents on the countertop and walls, whereas spaces that are more masculine don't have a lot of that but are sleeker, simple, and pared down. A few cool kitchen gadgets that are not only visually interesting but also serve a purpose would be the perfect touch. As far as construction details when planning a masculine kitchen, I would choose a bullnose or flat-edge countertop profile, as well as a cabinet door style that is clean and simple.
