While it's fun to dream about having an enormous bathroom with a large walk-in shower, double vanities, and a beautiful freestanding tub, most homeowners have a smaller space to contend with and have to design a space that is large on style while being small on space. We have some great tips on how to make the most out of a small bathroom!
White is a great color and finish choice when dealing with smaller spaces. By keeping your bathroom white and bright, it will make it feel bigger. A light flooring and white tile will visually make the space expand. I would also suggest limiting the tile selections to just a few. A busy bathroom will look small. White subway tile is a very popular choice for bathrooms right now, due to its timeless appeal and low price point. Another way to have your bathroom appear larger is to add a mirrored wall. The reflection will give the illusion of more space.
There are many choices when it comes to your plumbing fixtures and they come in all sizes. By selecting a smaller tub or vanity, it can open up floor space and make a small bathroom seem less cramped than if too large of fixtures are in the space.
There are bathrooms that are not only small in size, but also have a few quirks, whether it be a sloped ceiling or an ill placed window. Use these quirks to your advantage. If a slope comes down really low and is too low for anyone to sit or stand beneath, use the open space for storage. Place a few shelves or a floating cabinet and you will gain storage space where you otherwise wouldn't be able to place anything. Windows in front of a vanity? It's not the end of the world! Hang a decorative mirror from chains so it sits in front of the window but still allows light to flow into the room.
Every square inch of space is valuable in a small bathroom and you have to be creative with your storage and look for unique ways to add more storage. Open shelving above the toilet can serve as a place to store towels, bath products, and other miscellaneous items. The door to the bathroom is also a valuable piece of real estate. Install hooks or a towel bar on the door so you can place towels or robes for convenience. It's also best to select fixtures with storage. Your vanity should have the capability to store a few items out of sight.
