Designing a Fabulous Laundry Room

Updated on: August 01, 2022

Your laundry room is one of the most used rooms in a house, but it is the most forgotten room when it comes to design. Usually a washer and dryer are just thrown in the space with a wire shelf above, where is the fun in that?!

Planning is Key

I would suggest taking the time and planning out what you would like to accomplish in the laundry room and what would get you the most out of the space. In addition to the main function, washing and drying your laundry, do you need space to fold? A place to iron? Storage for cleaning supplies? I would also suggest making room for a hanging bar so you can hang the clothing that isn't able to go into the dryer. A utility sink is vital for soaking heavily soiled clothing, or even as a space to water your potted plants. Make note of everything you need to fit in the space and try your best to fit it all in. There are clever ways to build in a lot of these functions.

Finish Selections

The materials you choose for the laundry room are very important as well. You need a durable countertop surface that can withstand water, chemicals, and is easy to clean up. Laminate (for the budget minded) and quartz are great choices for counters. The flooring also needs to be able to stand up to water and be slip resistant. Now just because you need sturdy materials doesn't mean you can't have a little fun with color and pattern in your laundry room. Washers and dryers are available in so many colors like red, blue, green, and even bubblegum pink. Companies like LG and Electrolux have the widest variety of colors. Pair the colorful appliances with white cabinetry and it would really pop in the room. I would also select a punchy backsplash to add to the laundry room. It is typically a small area to cover and why not have something that makes you smile every time you walk in? You spend enough time in there, might as well be happy while you're folding loads and loads of laundry!

Special Considerations

Now if you are on two sides of the spectrum - a small space or an over-sized space - use your lack of or extra space to your advantage! A stackable washer/dryer combo is a great choice when your laundry room is the size of a small closet. If possible, squeeze in shelving and add in colorful baskets for storage. There's no reason why you have to sacrifice style with a small space. If you have a very large laundry room and you all the necessities fit in the space with ease, make the room your family's "command center" as well. I would consider adding hooks for backpacks and totes, shoe storage, and a place where all the family's schedules, notes, etc can be displayed. It makes it so nice to have a central location where everyone in the family can go to find their "stuff"!
