Creating a Modern Farmhouse KitchenCreating a Modern Farmhouse Kitchen

There is a definite trend of creating a cozy, "home-y" environment in the kitchen, which invites people in and also allows the homeowner to love spending time in that space. The "farmhouse" style is a popular style when it comes to designing kitchens and with the right selections, you can modernize it and make it more "cool" than "country".Cabinets

First selection would be your cabinets! Painted white is a great choice for a clean and simple appearance, but if you really want a stained cabinet, I would choose a medium stained finish with a little distressing. Our new Vintage finishes would be a great choice! If you want to change it up, go for white cabinets on the wall and stained cabinets for the island. For the style of the cabinets, a Shaker style cabinet or style that isn't very ornate (the Springfield Style is a great option). The goal with the finish and cabinet style collection is to select one that is simple, unadorned, and clean looking.

Sink and Faucet Selection

The next step would be to select your sink and faucet. I absolutely love the look of an apron-front sink. It brings a level of authenticity to the "farmhouse" look. You could select a porcelain version which is the classic choice or for a modern twist, select a stainless steel version. The stainless steel version is sleek and gives it a more contemporary look. To balance it out, I would select a more traditional style faucet in brushed nickel. A gooseneck faucet with a small amount of detail is the perfect choice.

Extras

Now that the basics are selected, you can move to the extras, the backsplash, hardware, and lighting. These elements are going to bring the whole look together. Most farmhouse kitchens have a subway tile backsplash, which I absolutely love and will never go out of style. If you want to stick with subway tile but want a little change, try using a gray or black grout. It makes it more modern and makes the tile really stand out. Or you could install it in a herringbone pattern rather than straight across. If you want to break out of the subway tile trend, then there are a variety of backsplashes you can choose from. A backsplash that uses a mix of materials, such as stone and glass, would be a great choice. A backsplash is also a chance to infuse a little color. Select a glass backsplash in an eye catching color if you want your kitchen to pop!

Cabinet hardware is the finishing touch to your cabinet selections. A farmhouse style kitchen isn't complete with cup pulls. To me, it's the perfect hardware style for your cabinet drawers. There are the traditional cup pulls but there are also some that are a little different and would make your kitchen unique. For the cabinet doors, a simple knob is all you need in a matching finish. For the most modern take on farmhouse style, I would choose sleek bar style pulls.

Lighting is the "jewelry" for any space and will complete your farmhouse look! Most kitchens have the opportunity for pendant lights, usually over the island or peninsula countertop. I would stay away from ornate lighting, instead choosing simple glass pendants or small industrial style pendants.
