Creating a Kitchen Color Scheme

Updated on: August 01, 2022

It is important to have a color scheme in mind when beginning a kitchen remodeling project. It will help speed along the decision making process when you have a clear idea of what you want the final result to look like. Below are steps in creating a kitchen color scheme…

Pull Inspiration Images

Today, we have so many places to look for design inspiration, from magazines (online and in print) to Houzz and Pinterest. Collect images from these sources of spaces you love and make note of what it is you like about the photo. It could be the layout, the colors used, or the overall feeling of the space. Having these inspiration images will help you make your selections down the road.

Pick Your Cabinet Colors

First step in selections will be to select your cabinet colors. Wood stained cabinetry is usually associated with more traditional interiors, while white cabinets are used in transitional and modern style spaces. If you want to mix it up and have a dual finish kitchen, you can select a wood stain and a paint or two complementary paint finishes.

Countertops

I would select your counter top material next. Many factors play into this decision… appearance and durability being the most important. Some folks want a marble top, which has unique veining and coloration, but can be a softer material and is subject to scratching and staining. Granite remains to be the most popular choice; it has a more uniform appearance but can still remain unique in its characteristics based on the slab you choose. Solid surfacing, such as Caesarstone, is becoming more and more popular due to all the choices available and durability.

Take Flooring into Consideration

Flooring materials are an important factor in your kitchen color scheme as well. Whether you are working with your current flooring or planning on installing new flooring, the cabinet finish you select should work with the flooring surface. This is especially important when you have a wood floor and are installing wood stained cabinets. You want the stains to be complementary to each other.

Final Decorative Touches…Backsplash and Hardware

The kitchen backsplash and hardware you choose are the final touches to the space and help pull together the entire scheme you are wanting to create. Most kitchens that have a Mediterranean or traditional appearance use tumbled stone backsplashes. An extremely popular choice (and affordable) for transitional kitchens is subway tile. Subway tile is a great choice because you can change the layout from stacked or lay them out in a herringbone pattern that will get everyone's attention. There are so many choices nowadays that I guarantee you will find one that pulls together everything in your space. Cabinet hardware also has limitless choices. The sleek, bar handles are very popular in the kitchens we have been designing.

Popular Color Schemes from Our Customers

Just one look at our gallery and you can see we have many different options for cabinetry and it's exciting to see all the color schemes our customers have put together in their kitchens. By far, a bright and light transitional kitchen has been the most popular, with customers pairing white cabinets with a light granite or solid surfacing. Backsplashes and hardware change the look of each of these kitchens with some people opting for a lighter choice while others add a splash of color with their choices. We do see dark wood stained cabinets being used with traditional interiors. The sky is the limit when choosing the color scheme for your kitchen and at the end of the day, you want to be in love with the most used space in your home!
