3 Tips for Designing Your Breakfast Nook3 Tips for Designing Your Breakfast Nook

No matter what size your kitchen is, a breakfast nook can be the perfect way to make the most of space in your kitchen or nearby. Breakfast nooks are often underutilized spaces within a kitchen and become a place where excess items start to gather on the table making the nook a place that stores clutter. Here are 3 things you can do to make your breakfast nook functional and inviting...

1. Keep the Color Palette Consistent

Too many colors can be distracting and make the breakfast nook disjointed from the kitchen when it was really designed to be part of your eat-in kitchen. That said, you can add small pops of color in the details to make the breakfast nook stand out. You can bring in seasonal elements so that you don't have to change the decor... try fresh cut flowers in Spring and Summer and autumn leaf arrangements or an assortment of squash in the fall.

2. The Details

Don't be afraid to add a couple special details as long as the color theme stays fairly consistent. This will help tie the breakfast nook space to the kitchen and create interest. When you are choosing a table make sure to think about the shape of the nook. For square spaces round or square tables work best... for narrow spaces rectangular tables are best and you may want to consider a bench on one side to maximize space. Details like tablecloths, vases and placemats will make the nook inviting and ready-to-use. When you are thinking about seating make sure it is comfy - somewhere you would want to sit and have breakfast on a Sunday morning.

3. Let the Light In

The bigger the windows and the more natural light you have the better. Try using Roman shades instead of curtains so the light can get in. That way you still have privacy but don't detract from the view!

Adding natural elements to your home’s interiors is nothing new in the design world and is definitely not a trend but a must! If it’s good enough for Mother Nature, it’s good enough for our homes! Bringing nature inside introduces an organic and calming feeling into a space. Natural stone, brick, seagrass, and plants are all elements that are easily incorporated into a home. Whatever you choose and how you choose to incorporate it should speak to your style and not compete against your preferred design style. All types of interiors can have a natural element introduced and it work well with the rest of the space.
