It may not seem like a likely item to consider storing, but if you
incorporate a place in your home for housing mud, you’ll find that dirty shoes
won’t make for a dirty home anymore.

“Our clients are having us do lockers in their mudrooms so that everyone has
his own space for backpacks and coats and sporting equipment. With the lockers,
we’re doing more of peg hooks as an open area for hanging coats and bin drawers
below for boots and shoes.”

Consider these cabinet uses:
-
Make sure there is adequate
shoe storage for both your family and guests. Consider open shelving with
a tray beneath for catching drips.
-
Assign a cubby to each family
member for housing purses, mittens and hats.
-
A tall, pantry-like cabinet is
a great place to keep large sports equipment like golf clubs, skis,
baseball bats, or lacrosse sticks. Use bin or drawer storage for smaller
items, like balls and frisbies.
-
Incorporate a storage bench to
sit on when removing shoes or to place groceries on when taking off your
coat. For an added benefit, create a storage area within the bench for
out-of-season items.
-
Incorporate individual storage
lockers into the design to keep your children’s items organized.
-
Like to garden? Include
storage space for gardening gloves, a watering can, plant food, and small
tools.
-
Think it’s unlikely that
you’ll actually return that hammer or screwdriver to the garage (or don’t
feel like going there every time you need something)? Include a small
drawer for your most-used tools.
-
Store pet leashes and food
bowls here to avoid kitchen or laundry room mess.
