Whether it’s far from the kitchen or shares an open floor plan, the family room
can benefit from both freestanding and built-in cabinetry.
Consider these cabinet uses:
- A freestanding island, a row
of waist-high bookcases or upper cabinets hung over an island or counter
are great ways to carve up the space between a family room and an adjacent
kitchen.
- Take advantage of the variety
of cabinet possibilities, like open shelving and unique drawer sizes. Keep
in mind that closed cabinetry (or glass-fronted) is a smart choice to
protect your items if you have young children.
- Dress up your fireplace with a
wood storage cubby and fireplace tool. Install a cupboard adjacent to it to
house board games.
- Bookshelves are a necessity in
most living rooms; create custom ones in a wood and finish that
coordinates with your furniture.
- Take advantage of an unused
corner by installing an angled cabinet unit to display collectables and
supply added storage.
- If your family room is far
from the kitchen, install an undercounter refrigerator (either paneled or
in a large cabinet) to hold soft drinks or wine. Install a drawer above to
house cocktail napkins, coasters and straws.
