YACHT

Boats no longer have to be equated with galley kitchens. If space permits, there are countless ways to let a well-equipped kitchen set sail.

“Using marine grade plywood ensures that the cabinets will not deteriorate in the event that they do come in contact with a lot of moisture. Adjustable steel legs helped to get the cabinets level. Use cabinets with good hinges and drawer glides to keep them from opening inadvertently.

We used what’s called a cooking well—it’s a stainless steel section of countertop that’s recessed so that we could install a cooktop where pots and pans wouldn’t slide off. Spill would also be contained instead of running onto the cabinets and floor.”

Consider these cabinet uses:

  • To ensure that your cabinets are seaworthy, be sure to use marine-grade plywood.

  • For added style, be sure to choose cabinets whose wood and finish echoes the boat’s other wooden elements.

  • A furniture-style kitchen is not a smart look for the sea. Opt for built-in cabinetry.

  • Anodized aluminum drawer slides with stainless steel bottoms work well in a moist environment.
